Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

SideQuest ("we," "our," or "us") is operated by SideQuest, Inc. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the SideQuest mobile application (the "App"). Please read this policy carefully. By using SideQuest, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

2. Information We Collect

We may collect the following types of information:

  • Account Information: When you sign up using Apple Sign In or Google Sign In, we receive the information made available by that provider, such as your name, email address, and account identifier. Email signup also uses an email address and password, managed by our authentication provider, Supabase.
  • Profile Data: Information you provide during onboarding, including your interests, social energy preference (vibe), and display name.
  • Location Data: With your explicit permission, we collect precise location data to find quests near you and verify quest completion via GPS. You can revoke location access at any time through your device settings.
  • Photos and Messages: We store profile photos, quest photos, crew-chat messages and attachments that you submit. We also process quest descriptions, invitations, mentions, ratings, and reports you send.
  • Contacts: If you choose Find from contacts and grant permission, we read contact names and email addresses on your device. We send SHA-256 hashes of normalized email addresses to our server to find matching SideQuest accounts. Contact names and original email addresses from your address book are not uploaded for matching. Hashing is not anonymization. Invitations use the sharing app you choose and are subject to that service's practices.
  • Notifications: If enabled, we store a push token to deliver quest and social notifications. You can manage notification permissions in device settings.
  • Usage Data: We collect information about how you interact with the App, including quests viewed, accepted, and completed, XP earned, streaks, and badges unlocked.
  • Device Information: We may collect device type, operating system version, and app version for troubleshooting and improving the experience.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the SideQuest experience
  • Find and display quests relevant to your location and interests
  • Verify quest completion through photo and GPS verification
  • Track your progress, XP, streaks, and achievements
  • Enable friends, leaderboards, activity feeds, invitations, and crew chats
  • Match contacts, process reports and blocks, and prevent abuse
  • Generate suggested quests using your selected interests, difficulty, budget, and nearby venues
  • Improve and personalize your experience
  • Communicate important updates about the App

4. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored securely using Supabase, which provides:

  • Encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest
  • Access controls for accounts, quests, and shared content
  • Authentication through Apple, Google, or Supabase email sign-in
  • Secure cloud infrastructure hosted on AWS

While we implement industry-standard security measures, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.

Your display name, username, avatar, XP, and social profile can be visible to other signed-in users. Quest visibility and crew membership control access to shared quest content. Messages and photos you share may be viewed or saved by their recipients. Reports may be reviewed by authorized moderators. Do not include information in shared content that you do not want its audience to see.

5. Third-Party Services

SideQuest integrates with the following third-party services:

  • Supabase: Database, authentication, and file storage
  • Apple Sign In: Authentication provider
  • Google Sign In: Authentication provider
  • Apple Maps: Map display and location services
  • Google Maps Platform: Place search, venue details, and directions. Requests may include search text, location, and route endpoints.
  • Google Gemini: AI quest suggestions. Generation requests include selected interests, difficulty, budget, and nearby venue details. We do not send your account email, contact list, or crew messages in quest-generation prompts.
  • Expo: App development and update framework
  • PostHog and Sentry: In builds where enabled, product analytics and error diagnostics may include app interactions, device/app information, and account identifiers. These integrations are used to understand and improve the service, not to show targeted advertising.

Each of these services has its own privacy policy governing how they handle your data.

6. We Do Not Sell Your Data

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. We do not share your data with advertisers. Your information is used solely to provide and improve the SideQuest experience.

7. Data Retention

We retain account data while your account is active. You can request deletion in Profile → Settings → Delete Account. The app confirms when deletion completes; if a request fails, you can retry or contact support. Copies already saved by other users are outside our control. Service backups and records that must be retained for security or legal obligations may remain subject to their applicable retention periods. You can contact us with questions about deletion or data held by our service providers.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Correction: Request correction of inaccurate personal data
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Withdrawal of Consent: Revoke location, contacts, camera, photo, or notification permissions through your device settings
  • Data Export: Request an export of your data in a portable format

9. Children's Privacy

SideQuest is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will delete it promptly. 10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last revised. We will notify you of material changes through an in-app notification. Your continued use of SideQuest after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
